Spray Coating Service

Composite parts may require spray coating to colour match to other existing panels with an assembly or to have a lacquer applied which protects resin within the composite from UV degradation.

Lacquers can be full gloss, satin, matt or can include a coloured fade or tint for an extra special finish. Alternatively, for solid colour all we require is a RAL or pantone colour reference.

Our coating department is not limited to composites, offering a full spraying service across a range of substrates. With three large spray booths and a dedicated mixing room we have the capacity to meet both small run and volume coating batches.

What is the spray coating process?

When it comes to coatings, our experienced team are able to achieve stunning finishes. The below details the process required to achieve a clear coat finish, synonymous with visual carbon fibre components.

Firstly, the part has to be fully cleaned to remove any residual surface contaminants from earlier stages in the process. Surfaces are abraded to 320 grit and degreased before receiving a coat of clear primer. This process is repeated as required until pinholes and surface imperfections are eliminated.

With a final rub down the clear top coat is then applied using our professional grade spraying equipment at 2 bar pressure. This top coat can be either gloss, satin or matt dependent on customer requirements. Satin or matt parts are then passed to final inspection.

Gloss parts have to pass through a final polishing process using both 1500 and wet 3000 grit sanding discs followed by the careful application of polishing compounds. Polishing helps to deepen the base colour of the carbon and leaves a flawless high gloss finish.
