Polar Manufacturing was behind one of the main award winners at the 2015 Lighting Design Awards in London last night (19 March 2015).
Emergence, the stunning new lighting sculpture at Heathrow Airport’s Terminal 2 International Departures lounge, was named Special Project of the Year, and Polar Manufacturing’s work on the project was recognised by judges who described the lighting sculpture as ‘simply beautiful’.
In consultation with the designers, Cinimod Studio, Polar recommended replacing original plans to use large amounts of steel and utilise composite materials instead. A specially assembled team from Polar Manufacturing worked with Cinimod to construct 500 individual components. The whole project ran on a tight schedule, taking 11 weeks from tooling design to on-site installation.
Emergence beat stiff competition from Battersea Power Station and the Museum of London who were also shortlisted.
"Emergence is exquisitely engineered. The result is fantastic; the design and build is unique and beautiful. It’s a real testament to team effort and collaboration and I really appreciate the hours (and weekends) that was put into this project by the team at Polar Manufacturing. The sculpture is unique for its form and is a triumph of design, engineering and production."
